Tree of the Year 2009

The winner Tree of the Year 2009 is 84 years old Popral Tree from Bratislava which obtained 596 votes. On the 2nd place is Elm Tree from Liptovské Revúce with 594 votes and on the 3th place Lime Tree from Myjava with 591 votes.


The aim of the nationwide inquiry of the most interesting, rare, beautiful or otherwise appealing tree is to highlight the importance of trees in our lives and arouse people's interest in their environment and its protection.


Course of the inquiry in 2009:

  • Nominations (March - May)
  • Selection of 12 trees - finalists (May - June)
  • Public voting (July,11 - October, 2 )
  • Celebratory publishing of a winner (October)

The Ekopolis Foundation received 88 nominations in 2009. From all the nominated trees, an expert jury selected 12 finalists.
The wining tree won an expert arborist review and the financial gift in the amount of 332 EUR (10 Ths. SKK) that can be used for improving its surrounding.


In case of a need it will obtain also a professional treatment by International Society of Arboriculture in Slovakia (ISA Slovakia).

The trees on the 2nd and 3rd place gained the same financial contribution for their treatment or for improving their surrounding. Tree voters were rewarded with tokens they can trade for books.
