Amber trail

Context

Amber Trail is an ancient trade trail linking the Mediterranean and the Baltic Sea. Hundreds of years before the Roma Empire arose, tradesmen from different nations and cultures traveled up and down the Amber Trail to exchange goods and knowledge.
Nowadays, the international program called Amber Trail Greenway links the most valuable nature and culture heritage and local development initiatives along the way Budapest - Banska Štiavnica - Krakow. The program is implemented by three independent foundations located in Poland, Slovakia and Hungary.

Within the Slovak Ekopolis Foundation, the program is a specific one, because it is not focused primarily on granting, but also on the implementation of practical activities related to sustainable development of selected Slovak regions through tourism. The program offers a variety of activities - providing advice and leading our partners methodically, financial and non-financial support or providing services of travel agency along the ancient trail. The Amber Trail Greenway is a part of the Central European Greenways Program.

The Goal

Activism of local people and municipalities towards tourism development in their region.

The program is built on our belief that each village has something interesting to present to its visitors and can profit from that. It is necessary to discover these attractions, make them more inviting, offer suitable ways to or pull the visitors to the region directly. In several locations we simply provide consultations to local people, in others we participate in the activities ourselves.

The Amber Trail civic association was established to implement some program activities. Besides the program it has a statute of a travel agency and can provide active non-profit business in tourism.
